Restraint is a budget, not a mood
People hear the word restrained and picture a designer holding back — a smaller logo, a quieter colour, a shorter sentence. That is not restraint. That is timidity wearing restraint's coat.
Restraint is arithmetic. You are given a fixed amount of a reader's attention, and you decide what to spend it on. Spend it in six places and the reader remembers none of them.
One drop of ink
Our own site runs at roughly ninety-five percent black and white. The remaining five percent is a single scarlet, and it appears at most once per screen. That ratio is not an aesthetic preference. It is what makes the red mean anything at all.
When two elements compete for attention, the answer is never more colour. It is more black.
- Decide what the one thing is before you open the file.
- Give everything else less room, not a different colour.
- If two things both feel essential, one of them is not.
Clients rarely ask for restraint. They ask for impact, and then they are surprised that the quiet version delivers it.
